Spring is rapidly approaching which means it’s time to set up your garden for success by effectively preparing for the season. A great garden requires correct maintenance and preparation in order to flourish. Here are five ways you can prepare your garden for a successful season from your gardening experts at S&S Landscaping!
- Prepare your shed and tools
Ensure you have the necessary supplies to begin the gardening season. Sharpen blades, oil hinges, and replenish your supplies. It’s a lot easier to go over your supplies before you can start planting so you can be sure your prepared – without having to scramble at the last minute. Make S&S Landscaping is your one-stop-shop for all your supplies. We carry everything you need so you don’t have to waste time shopping at multiple stores.
- Clear out weeds and extra debris
Do a complete spring cleaning of the area to remove any dead organic matter and weeds that might still be alive. Fresh mulch needs to be raked away to expose the soil and if you leave weeds around, they can start competing with your garden crops later.
- Cultivate the soil
Pounding rain, gravity, and other forces from mother nature can cause soil to become compacted over time. Ensure your roots have room to breathe by loosening up the soil before planting. If you plan to plant in a young bed, cultivating the soil will remove rocks and roots. Wait for a time when the soil is dry and crumbly to the touch. If you cultivate the soil while it’s wet, you’ll end up with big, brick-like clumps. In established beds, simply use a broad fork to break up the soil to prime it for planting. This will allow the roots to penetrate the soil more easily.
- Use compost
Taking the extra time to compost and build soil fertility will help your plants be more successful throughout the year. A few weeks before planting, blanket your garden with at least a half-inch of good-quality compost. Compost provides the soil with fresh, nutrient-rich organic matter and will help the soil better handle water so it can nourish your crops effectively. S&S Landscaping carries only the highest-quality composts at an affordable price. Stop by our garden center to view our compost options.
- Apply mulch
Finally, apply a thick layer of mulch to your gardening area. Mulch is more effective at keeping weeds away if you apply before the weeds start sprouting. Don’t wait too long to mulch an area or you may eventually find your garden overtaken by pesky weeds.
